Top 5 Brain-Boosting Supplements and/or Foods


There are various supplements available to the public that promise to increase cognitive and mental capabilities. However, few supplements provide known evidence to support such claims. In fact, proprietary blend formulas may not contain enough of the supplements that will actually improve memory and cognition. On the contrary, some evidence suggests that some supplements can improve memory and cognition in certain individuals.



1. Fish Oils

*Fish Oils such as Omega 3 Fatty Acids EPA and DHA offer a variety of health benefits such as mental health, heart health, and treating inflammatory disease. Tip: Search for omega supplements with a positive quality rating to ensure the product contains enough quality EPA and DHA and less mercury.








2. Vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help improve the blood supply to the brain, including to help reduce the risk of age-related degeneration.





3.Vinpocetine (Vinca minor)

*Vinpocetine is a compound or extracts from the periwinkle plant’s seeds that are used in some nootropics today. Vinpocetine is known to help increase blood flow to the brain while dilating the blood vessels to reduce blood viscosity; this supplement can help promote healthy attention, memory, and concentration. In some places around the world, vinpocetine is used to treat senile dementia.





4. Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC)

*Acetyl-L-Carnitine is an Amino Acid that can be used to help memory loss and improve nerve pain. The human body produces this Amino Acid naturally to produce energy. According to WebMD, “There is evidence that this amino acid helps with Alzheimer’s disease, Peyronie’s disease, Down syndrome and nerve pain.”







                                                     5. Choline

*Choline is a macronutrient that helps with normal brain development and proper nerve function. phosphatidylcholine is a compound that makes up structural fat that can be found in certain foods. Foods that contain choline for healthy brain development are Eggs, Liver, Salmon, and Cauliflower, including other various foods available today. Roughly 550 mg is needed daily. However, you can get higher levels of choline in supplements. Preferably made from a whole food source.

  1. You know I wrote a post one time ago on brain health and what is so interesting is the many foods and supplement that can be taken for proper brain function. We should take advantage of all of this natural stuff that is so beneficial to our health. In this case our brain health.

    • I look forward to reading your post about brain health, Norman! You bring up a great point about how we need to take better care of our brain health these days, especially since we have access to all these amazing brain-boosting foods and latest discoveries in nutrition and health! I would like to know what’s available so that I can help others too. For instance, my dad has epilepsy so his diet consists of certain foods that have improved his health with fewer seizures; he eats eggs (choline), some cold water fatty fish, and blueberries.   2. It is good to know about this.. I didn’t know that we could get some of these brain boost from some food. What would you recommend for a person that works on creativea area to keep the brain active to generate great ideas? 😀

    • Thank you, Alsentid! Great question! Unfortunately, I am not a neurologist and cannot give you a concise, accurate answer to that particular question in regards to what part of the brain can be further enhanced with the use of supplements (ie creativity and ideas). Although, some studies demonstrate that a combination of brain foods, supplements, and brain training “games” can improve certain areas of the brain.
      Just as the human body needs regular exercise and practice to excel in any sporting activity or any skill, the human brain requires a constant challenge to function satisfactorily or exceptionally well. Perhaps, the best option would involve a daily regimen consisting of a healthy diet which includes brain-boosting foods, supplements, and brain training that specifically targets the areas of the brain you are seeking to enhance (training such as online brain games: neuro-nation, luminosity etc.).     I knew about fish oil, and I do take fish oil supplements, but the others are news to me. I knew vitamin C was good for so many things, but brain health was something I never realized.

    This is so important, especially as we age. With people living longer and longer, it’s so important to remain sharp. I’ll definitely bookmark this page and return when I’m ready to order some supplements.

  4. Very important information. Brain -Health is most important part in our life if we are careless then the functionalities of brain will shut down and that cause many problems like lack of thinking ,amnesia, and lack of memorizing.
